Daenerys Targaryen, later hailed as Stormborn, was born on the island of Dragonstone in 281 AC during one of the greatest storms of the century. That tempest claimed many ships in the Targaryen fleet and raged so fiercely that her birth itself was seen as an omen. Her mother, Queen Rhaella, perished shortly thereafter, leaving the infant Daenerys and her older brother, Prince Viserys, as the last living children of King Aerys II Targaryen, the Mad King.

With Robert’s Rebellion victorious and the Iron Throne seized by House Baratheon, the infant princess and her brother were spirited away into exile. Thus began a life marked by wandering, hardship, and survival.

Years of Exile in Essos (281–297 AC)

Daenerys’s earliest years were spent in hiding across the Free Cities, ever moving with her brother Viserys. They lived briefly in Braavos, then Pentos, under the grudging patronage of magisters who saw in them potential pawns.

Viserys, embittered and proud, became increasingly paranoid and abusive, calling his younger sister “his possession.” Daenerys, however, grew gentle and observant, a quiet soul who watched the world with wide, lilac eyes.

In 297 AC, tragedy struck. While traveling near the outskirts of Pentos, the exiled royals were waylaid by a band of brigands. Seeking coin, they robbed Viserys and slew him when he resisted. Daenerys survived only by chance, spared as worthless to them. This sudden, brutal end freed her from her brother’s shadow but left her adrift, alone in a foreign world.

A Meeting of Storm and Fire (298 AC)

Fate altered her path when she came into the company of Richard Baratheon, son of Lord Duncan Baratheon and Princess Rhaenyra Daeragon. At first, he was her kinsman’s enemy, of the blood that had usurped her family’s throne. Yet Richard was unlike his uncles Robert or Stannis—he possessed the violet eyes and Valyrian bearing of his mother’s line, tempered by the strength of House Baratheon.

In him, Daenerys found not only a protector but a partner. Richard recognized her not as a pawn, but as a dragon of her own right. Their bond grew swiftly, forged by shared Valyrian heritage, dreams of dragons, and the will to reclaim greatness.

Empress Consort of the Empire (300 AC)

When Richard Baratheon rose in triumph, uniting dragon, stag, and storm beneath his banner, Daenerys became not merely his wife but his Empress Consort. Together they presided over the Empire of Westeros and Western Essos, ruling from the white-marble spires of Rygoros.

Her presence softened Richard’s fiery might. Where he was storm, she was the steady flame; where he wielded steel, she offered mercy. As queen, she championed the voices of the smallfolk, freed captives taken in war, and tempered the harshness of conquest with compassion.

She was mother to eight children—Princes and Princesses who bore the mingled blood of dragon and stag, heirs to a realm spanning two continents.

The Long Reign and War of Ice

Daenerys stood beside Richard during his greatest trial: the War for the Dawn’s Return. She rode her dragon, Drogon, into battle at Moat Cailin, fire meeting ice as the living faced the White Walkers. In that battle, Richard slew the Night King, yet Daenerys’s flame burned no less bright, sustaining the armies of the living.

When the dead fell, she became forever bound in legend as one of the saviours of mankind.

Empress Dowager (360–??? AC)

After Richard’s passing, following sixty years of rule, Daenerys assumed the role of Empress Dowager. Though her eldest son, Daemon I, now reigned as Emperor, she remained a guiding presence in Rygoros.

Counselling from the shadows of the Golden Throne, she was revered as the “Mother of the Empire.” Her wisdom steered policy, her compassion healed wounds, and her example reminded all rulers that power must serve the realm, not consume it.

She outlived her beloved Richard by decades, watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow into rulers of provinces, generals of armies, and bearers of the dragon legacy. In her final years, her silver hair turned white as snow, yet her violet eyes never lost their fire.

Legacy

Empress Dowager Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen was remembered not only as the last child of the Targaryen kings, but as the first Empress of a realm greater than any her ancestors had ever dreamt.
