Book VI: The Sons of the Storm Dragon
Chapter Twenty-One – The Seeds of Division
The empire of fire and storm stood tall, but empires are most fragile when they seem unshakable.
Richard and Daenerys’s children had grown into men and women, each with dragons, each with power, and each with ambition. Though Richard loved them all, the weight of the Iron Throne fell upon his eldest son, Prince Daemon Baratheon, Crown Prince of Westeros and rider of Solarion.
Daemon was bold, hot-blooded, and proud, the very image of his father in youth. He dreamed of conquest beyond conquest—marching east to Yi Ti, west to the Sunset Sea. He longed for war, where Richard longed for peace.
His younger brother Prince Aegor resented this. Aegor was every bit the warrior Daemon was, but more cunning, more calculating. His charisma won him knights, lords, and soldiers who whispered: “Aegor, not Daemon, should be the heir.”
Between them stood Princess Elaena, Daemon’s twin. Wise and diplomatic, she alone saw the danger of their rivalry. She urged her father to settle the question of succession with clarity, but Richard, ever hopeful, refused to believe his sons would destroy each other.
“The blood of storm and fire binds them,” he told Daenerys. Yet in his heart, he feared the storm to come.
Chapter Twenty-Two – The Daughters of Flame
The daughters of Richard were no less formidable.
-
Princess Rhaella, gentle yet unyielding, had become the people’s princess, beloved across the realm. She tended to the poor, healed the sick, and earned the faith of the Seven’s faithful. Some whispered she should be queen.
-
Princess Rhaenrya and her twin Alysanne grew into opposites: Rhaenrya calm and graceful, Alysanne fiery and quick-tongued. Together, they ruled the court’s culture, hosting tournaments, feasts, and councils that brought together lords from every corner of the empire.
-
Prince Rhaegon, the quiet scholar, vanished often into Valyria, delving into lost lore. Some said he sought to master sorcery. Others feared he sought something darker.
-
Prince Duncan, the storm reborn, grew into a warrior like his grandsire, rash and daring. Though beloved by soldiers, his recklessness worried Richard.
Thus, the imperial court was a nest of dragons—beautiful, proud, and dangerous.
Chapter Twenty-Three – Brothers in Arms
The tension between Daemon and Aegor erupted during the Tournament of Harrenhal, held in the twenty-fifth year of Richard’s reign.
When Daemon unhorsed Aegor in the lists, mocking him before thousands, Aegor rose in fury and challenged his brother to single combat. Only the Emperor’s command prevented bloodshed.
Richard’s voice thundered across the field:
“Your quarrels shame this house! You are brothers, sons of the dragon and the stag. If you would fight, then fight together, not against each other.”
He sent them both east, commanding them to lead an expedition into the disputed lands. For a time, the brothers fought as allies, burning pirate holds and bringing order. Yet even there, lords and soldiers whispered: “Which prince do you follow? The hammer or the sword?”
The seeds of civil war had been sown.
Chapter Twenty-Four – The Old Lion’s Gambit
In the west, the Lannisters stirred. Though humbled by Richard’s conquests, their ambition had not died. Cersei’s surviving kin saw in the rivalry of Richard’s sons a chance for vengeance.
Quietly, they courted Aegor. Gold flowed into his coffers, and whispers into his ear: “Your father loves Daemon, but you are wiser. You are the true heir.”
Meanwhile, Daemon was courted by the Reach, who saw in his martial glory a chance to restore their power. Knights of Highgarden toasted him as the future of the realm.
Richard’s empire, so vast, was beginning to crack along the lines of succession.
Chapter Twenty-Five – Shadows of the North
Beyond the Wall, word came of white shadows stirring once more. Rangers vanished, villages froze, and rumors spoke of dead men walking.
Richard sent his daughter Elaena north with her Stark husband to investigate. There, she saw what few still believed: the Others had returned.
Elaena sent word to King’s Landing: “Father, the true war is not between your sons, but between the living and the dead.”
Yet in the capital, her warning was drowned out by courtly feuds.
Chapter Twenty-Six – The Gathering Storm
In the twilight of his reign, Richard looked upon his empire. He had united Westeros, conquered Essos, reforged Valyria, and raised dragons anew. He was Emperor of Westeros and Essos, the greatest ruler since Aegon the Conqueror.
Yet even he could not still the storms of blood within his own house.
He turned to Caesarion, stroking the golden scales of the mighty dragon. “I gave them peace,” he whispered, “but they crave fire. Perhaps it is the curse of dragonlords—to conquer all, only to be destroyed by their own blood.”
And so, as the Golden Reign waned, the sons and daughters of the Storm Dragon sharpened their claws.
The empire trembled, not from without, but from within.
