Book V: The Golden Reign
Chapter Sixteen – The Heirs of Fire
The Red Keep rang with the laughter of children. Richard and Daenerys’s brood, eight in all, became symbols of hope for the empire:
-
Prince Daemon Baratheon, Crown Prince of Westeros, bold and proud, Richard's chosen heir and already a dragon rider upon his mount Solarion.
-
Princess Elaena Baratheon, Daemon’s twin, silver-haired and Violet-eyed, wise beyond her years, a diplomat to rival her uncle Randall.
-
Prince Aegor, fiery and impetuous, said to wield a blade as if born with it in hand.
-
Princess Rhaella, gentle yet strong, beloved of the smallfolk, named after Daenerys’s mother.
-
Prince Rhaegon, thoughtful and brooding, more a scholar than a warrior, but with a cunning mind.
-
Prince Duncarys “Duncan”, fierce and stormy, wielding his grandsire’s namesake like a badge of honour.
-
Princess Rhaenrya, a beauty in her mother’s mould, graceful and beloved in courtly life.
-
Princess Alysanne, her twin, quick of wit, sharp of tongue, a spirit as fiery as the dragons she adored.
Their childhoods were marked not only by play but by the weight of destiny. Each was given a dragon’s egg, and one by one, the hatchlings cracked, until the skies above King’s Landing were dark with wings. The age of dragons had truly returned.
Chapter Seventeen – The Rule of Flame and Law
Richard knew conquest was only the beginning. To hold an empire, one must forge law as strong as steel.
Under Randall’s guidance as Lord Chancellor, the Code of Westeros and Essos was written: a set of imperial laws binding Westeros and Essos alike. It ended serfdom in the Reach, outlawed slavery across the Narrow Sea, and created the Imperial Council, where lords and magisters alike gave counsel to the Emperor.
Richard’s genius lay in balance. Where Aegon had ruled by fear, Richard ruled by both fear and love. Lords respected him, the smallfolk adored him, and even across the sea, the Free Cities marvelled at his justice.
Daenerys proved no less vital. As Empress, she softened her husband’s steel with compassion. Where Richard enforced law, she ensured mercy. Together, they became the twin pillars of the Golden Reign.
Chapter Eighteen – Shadows of Dissent
Yet peace breeds envy.
The Lannisters, though broken, whispered of vengeance. The Ironborn raiders resented imperial rule. In Essos, remnants of the old slave lords schemed in shadows, calling themselves the Sons of the Harpy Reborn.
Closer still, rivalries stirred among Richard’s own children. Daemon, proud Crown Prince, clashed with his brother Aegor, whose martial prowess won him followers among the younger knights. Elaena, though wise, feared her brothers’ ambitions might tear the empire asunder.
Richard watched them carefully. “The storm within a house can break an empire faster than swords at its gates,” he warned Daenerys.
Chapter Nineteen – The Northern Accord
In the North, the Starks held fast to their honour, wary of dragonlords. Richard knew fire alone could not bind winter.
He travelled himself to Winterfell, Caesarion looming over its ancient walls. There he knelt—not as conqueror, but as kin—to Eddard Stark’s son and heir, sealing the Northern Accord with marriage ties: Princess Elaena to a Stark lord, binding dragon and direwolf in blood.
This act won him the undying loyalty of the North, a loyalty that would outlast fire and storm alike.
Chapter Twenty – The Zenith of Empire
The Golden Reign reached its height in the twentieth year of Richard’s rule.
Westeros knew peace unknown for centuries. Essos, once fractured, thrived under imperial unity. Trade flourished, ships from Yi Ti to the Summer Isles bearing goods to King’s Landing, now the shining heart of two continents.
The people sang of the Emperor and Empress who had tamed fire, storm, and blood. They called the age The Dawn of Dragons.
And yet, even in glory, Richard knew shadows gathered. The children of empire were restless. Old houses whispered of lost crowns. In the far north, beyond the Wall, strange tales spoke of white shadows stirring again.
But for now, the throne of black-and-gold steel was secure, and upon it sat Richard Baratheon, the greatest dragonlord since the Doom of Valyria, Emperor of Westeros and Essos.
